What is in Number?

Yes , there is  lot expressed in Numbers. A number indicates/represents a reality. It is measuring the yardstick. Though number is giving only the quantitative measure which does not take into account the quality aspect, but still numbers play a major role in many contexts. most of the research work and their conclusions are based on the statistical inferences which are purely numbers. The application of numbers in research is numerous. It is used to measure the validity of the questionnaire, which conveys that the items in the questionnaire when using Cronbach Alpha should be consistent and should be above 0.7. if this number is not met, it is an indication that there is a need to change some questions or some questions to be eliminated. Therefore, this number is an indicator to make the necessary changes so as to get accurate response from the respondents. It is not only the items in the questionnaire which is measured in terms of numbers, but also coding which is given in numbers. Even if quality has to be measured, it quantified with numbers on a Likert scale of 5 points.  After all the responses are recorded with proper coding, it is decoded using software and the results are obtained. The output is interpreted according to the research questions and final conclusion is drawn based on the numbers. Hence numbers mean a lot.

I would like to quote the example of a research I am working on. It is on Efficacy of Women Entrepreneurs Schemes in the state of Karnataka and Tamandu. So here, there are lot of measures in terms of numbers like total number of women, number of literate and illiterate women, number of women registered as women entrepreneurs, number of unregistered women entrepreneurs, the income generated by the enterprises, the progresses in terms of profits. Measuring their wealth in terms of assets they possess. For measuring that the questionnaire developed was coded in terms of numbers. Right from measuring the contribution of women entrepreneurs towards the growth of the Economy till the measurement of individual women entrepreneurs’ own progress, numbers are used. Since the research is pertaining to two states, the importance of numbers is even more vital. Comparison of the women population in two states in numbers, the number of women who have availed the financial facility through the schemes, number of NGOs  through which the amount was  disbursed to women entrepreneurs. How many women entrepreneurs repaid. What is  is the amount given, what is is the rate of interests. All are numbers.
